The Bespoke View:

Barry has been putting the new Turbo RapidAir tyres through their paces on some long-distance rides. Here's what he found:

It's taken a while but I am now a convert to tubeless; the whole idea of barrelling down a mountain with a £5 inner tube holding your tyre upright now seems very weird.

Tubeless just seems right; especially with the benefits of improved puncture resistance and lower frictional losses.

My current favourites have been the Continental GP5000TL, which are a bit of a Goldilocks tyre; good at everything. But I was keen to try these new Specialized ones. Specialized have been singing the praises of tubeless for a while, and their normal tyres (such as the sublime Turbo Cotton) are wonderful.

I know Quick-step riders have been seen riding these; and anecdotal feedback is that they are great all-rounders.

The claims Spez make are certainly bold; with improvements in grip, reduced rolling resistance and easier installation.

So, I decided to take the Turbo RapidAir as my tyre of choice for the Two Volcano Sprint; 1100km of pretty shocking road surfaces, with lots of gravel, branches on roads, etc.

In the first 100km of the race there were 6 punctures amongst various riders; whereas I had none for the whole 1100km... Impressive stuff.

They feel quick; but at 28mm wide (there is also a 26mm model) there's no escaping the fact that they don't feel quite as quick accelerating as a lighter tyre (when mounted on a lightweight wheelset). But once you are up to speed that sensation disappears.

It's too early to say if they are better than the GP5000TL; but the fact it's even a contest is deeply impressive. Combined with their ease of install and fact that Specialized has designed a sealant specifically for higher pressure road tyres and I think they have created a winner...

Specialized say:

When we began developing the new S-Works Turbo RapidAir tyres with Deceuninck-Quick-Step, they had some hefty goals for us: Make the all-around fastest, lightest, and most puncture-resistant tyres we've ever made. And of course, they had to have the ride quality of tubulars. Sure, it wasn't easy, but one ride on them and you'll never want to be on anything else. Just ask our World Tour teams-no more tubulars for them.

The new design came from years of in-house development and testing. It features a flexible center construction that smooths out road imperfections and keeps rolling resistance low, while our exclusive GRIPTON® compound leads the industry in both speed and cornering grip. Next up, the wide tread design and stable sidewalls deliver precise handling while diving hard into corners. And finally, the cross-woven Blackbelt™ breaker is cut-resistant, but in the chance you do get a puncture, our new sealant plugs holes almost instantly.

All this adds up to a tyre that rolls faster than a tubular, grips better in the wet and dry, and has the same supple ride. But what about set-up? Follow our simple process and check the compatibility chart to ensure your RapidAir tyres install easily on the rim, and can be seated with just a floor pump.
